Sales & Marketing Training for New Business Start-ups

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win. Sun Tzu, The Art of War

Congratulations.

You’ve taken the first step to fulfilling your dreams as a new business owner.  Excited?  Anxious?  Apprehensive?  Well you should be.  There is no room for mistakes at this stage of the game, especially in today’s tough economic climate.

However here are some sobering statistics to consider:

Small Business Openings & Closings in 2007:

•  There were 637,100 new businesses, 560,300 business closures and 28,322 bankruptcies.

•  Two-thirds of new employer firms survive at least two years, 44 percent survive at least four years, and 31 percent survive at least seven years.

•  Findings do not differ greatly across industry sectors.

Sources: U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, Sept 2008

All of us know that due to the current recession these failures, across all business sectors, have ballooned.  But lets look again at the numbers from 2007 above, and keep in mind; this was a time when the economy for the most part was doing exceptionally well!

Why the high rate of failure?  Experts place the reasons why into five categories:

  • Starting the business for the wrong reasons. Lets agree that starting a business to “make money” can be a recipe for disaster.
  • Insufficient capital and inadequate money management skills.
  • Poor or non-existent business management skills.
  • Lack of planning: competition, poor location, expansion, employee issues etc.
  • Poor or non-existent sales and marketing skills.

How many of the above could be overcome with sufficient revenue flowing in to your business from an ability to MARKET your company and SELL your product?

All?  Some?  The fact is we all can find an accountant or a business manager, but if you do not know the fundamentals of sales and marketing the odds of survival DRAMATICALLY DECREASE.  It’s not enough to sell “just enough product to keep your head above water,” true affluence only comes about from selling an ABUNDANCE of product.

Now re-read the quote above from Sun Tzu, the famed Chinese military strategist, and you’ll see how applicable this quote is to starting a new business.

“Win first and then go to war” - LEARN the skills, the winning strategy, necessary to compete and win BEFORE you go to war, not after.
